Honors Physics

Mr. Loveland

 Room 131

Course Objectives &Prerequisites:       Honors physics is a first-year course, which covers the following topics: classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, kinetic theory, waves, optics and modern physics.  Since physics is the mathematical description of nature, a strong mathematical background is essential.  I recommend that students in honors physics should have completed Algebra II.  The more math you have taken, the more fun you
will have in honors physics. The objective of Honors Physics is to prepare the students to take the Utah State Core Physics Test, prepare for a University level physics class, hone their math and analytical skills, and appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature.

Text/Material/Fee:    The text used is Physics Principles with Applications by
Douglas C. Giancoli
University of California, Berkeley

Each student will bring daily: paper, pencil scientific calculator, textbook. A $10.00 lab fee is required.

Class Rules:                     1. Be courteous to the teacher and your fellow students

2. Come to class ready to work.

3. Obey the school rules.

Grading Procedures: Grades are on the Internet through Powerschool 24/7.  I will also post grades at the end of each week. A copy of a single student’s grades will be available upon request.  Test scores will be posted within two class periods.

t         Participation Points: (30%)

There will be two ways to earn participation points. One is through labs, and the other is through quizzes. Some quizzes will be in the form of TARDY QUIZZES. If you are late, you get a zero; if you are on time (in your seat when the bell rings), you may take the quiz for a grade. There are no makeups for tardy quizzes, but I will drop the lowest score. Other quizzes will come at various times during the class, emphasizing that it is better to be there but late, rather than not at all. People who miss the quiz due to a school-excused absence have 24 hours to make it up. I do not take late work. If you are absent, (excused), you will have the same number of working days to make up the work that you missed while you were gone. This includes tests.

t         Homework (30%)

Students will need to do homework every night to keep up. Students should plan on at least 1-2 hours every night. I will hand out the chapter objectives before each chapter with the homework and assigned reading, so each student can plan accordingly. These will also be on the internet on our school web site:       http://timpanogos.alpinedistrict.org/DEPARTMENTS/Science/Loveland/LovelandsHomePage.htm

The homework needs to be worked on nightly so that if problems arise they can be addressed at the next class session. Waiting until the night before it is due is not sufficient preparation.

t         Tests (40%)

Test will be given after each chapter. There will be times when two chapters will be combined for a test. Retakes of tests are available upon consultation with the teacher. I will strive to get the test results back within two class periods.
