I. Mathematics Department
We believe that math is important to understand the
world we live in and to open doors of opportunity. As educators, we will strive to create a
learning environment where all students can enjoy success. In order to achieve that success, students
and educators need to attend, contribute, and demonstrate good character.
II. Brief Course Description
The major postulates and theorems of Euclidean geometry
form the basis of this course. Logical
structures are investigated. Geometric
constructions and coordinate geometry are studied and non-Euclidean geometries
are introduced. Trigonometric ratios are
used to solve triangle problems.
III. Needed Materials
1.
Lined paper.
2.
A sharpened
pencil and a red pen.
3.
A scientific
calculator.
4.
Geometry Textbook
(covered).
IV. Homework and Grading Policies
You can expect approximately 40 minutes of daily
homework. It will be due at the
beginning of the next class session. You
must show your work on each problem to receive credit. Homework and warm-ups are graded each day in
class. Quizzes and tests will be graded
and returned within one to three class sessions.
On occasion students in the class may correct the work of
other students. This practice has an
important educational purpose in that it allows students to review as well as
consider problem-solving ideas that may be different than their own. Additionally it allows the teacher more time
to spend on classroom preparation and to work with individual students. Quizzes and tests will only be graded by the
teacher.
Grades are based on homework assignments (30%), in class
activities (15%), and tests (55%), and will follow the scale below. Our goal is for all students to achieve
success in this and future math courses.
To achieve that success the Timpanogos High
School Math Department has set a minimum competence level of 70%.
A 93 – 100 % B 83 – 86 % C 73 – 76 %
A- 90 – 92 % B- 80 – 82 % C- 70 – 72 %
B+ 87 – 89% C+ 77 – 79 % F 69 % and below
Note: If during the first three terms a student’s
percentage is 65 – 69, for one term only the failing grade will be
replaced with a “D-“ if a grade of “C” or better is earned in the following
term.
V. Make-up Work
Based upon the Timpanogos High
School Attendance policy, missed assignments due to absence may be made up
provided a note or phone call from a parent or guardian excusing the absence is
received at the Attendance office within two class sessions. Any missed work (including tests) due to
unexcused absences may not be made up for credit and therefore will affect the
academic grade.
If a student is absent on the date an assignment is given
and the absence is excused, the student will have the number of days he/she was
absent plus one day to turn in the assignment.
After that date the assignment will become a “0” in the grade book. If your absence is due to an excused school
activity, your assignment will be due before you leave for the activity. Late work due to unpreparedness
will not be accepted. Tests missed
due to excused absences must be made up before the next class session or in class
on the day the student returns.
VI. In Class Activities
Students in the class will be
working individually as well as with other students to complete a variety of in
class activities (ICAs). A student’s grade on these is based upon
accuracy and/or participation. In class
activities may include warm ups,
quizzes, taking notes, working on in class projects, and working on homework
when time is given, etc. To make up
points for ICAs due to an excused absence the student
should work something out with the teacher.
Missed points by reason of tardiness or unexcused absences may not be
made up.
VII. Tests
Tests must be completed within the class period. Time after school will not be allowed. Test
scores are directly related to homework preparedness. Students should seek help immediately for
concepts not understood. If a student is
prepared daily and studies before test day, his/her test score will reflect
that preparedness. Retakes will not be given.
VIII. Classroom Rules
1. LISTEN when
the teacher is talking. Let’s protect
our learning time!
2. Be in your seat when the bell rings. (first and last)
3. Do not touch
anything without permission in “Mrs. Sonico’s Areas”
as defined in class.
4. NO mobile
phones, MP3’s, or other electronics not related to what we are doing in
class.
5. NO
food. NO candy. NO drinks other than water.
Consequences will follow
if classroom rules are broken, for example: a student may be sent out of the
classroom and a loss in points will occur for the activity that is missed while
the student is out; a teacher-student meeting may occur; a parent may be
contacted, a “My Action Plan” sheet may be implemented etc.
Every
student has the right to an environment conducive to learning. Students will not
be allowed to prevent the teacher from teaching or to
stop any other student from learning.
All students will receive specific instructions concerning classroom and
school wide expectations at the beginning of the year. The school discipline plan and consequences
will be followed.
IX. Cell phones, MP3’s, and other electronic equipment
These are not allowed in the classroom. They are disrespectful and rude to the
teacher and distract you and others from learning. If they are used during class they will be
confiscated and delivered to the principal’s office at a convenient time. The owner may pick it up from the principal’s
office.
X. Cheating
All work is to be a student’s own. Cheating on assignments or tests or talking
to others during a test will result in a “0” which will be averaged with the
students’ other scores to determine his/her final grade.
XI. Attendance Policy
We will follow the policy outlined by the School Board
for the Alpine School District and the Timpanogos
High School Attendance Policy. (See the
Student Directory) Good attendance and participation will contribute to
success in the classroom. Punctuality is
important for success in school and in life.
Tardiness shows a lack of respect and dedication.
XII. When is Mrs. Sonico
available for extra help
