I. Mathematics Department Mission
Statement
We believe that math is important to understand the world
we live in and to open doors of opportunity.
As educators, we will strive to create a learning environment where all
students can enjoy success. In order to
achieve that success, students and educators need to attend, contribute, and
demonstrate good character.
II. Brief Course Description
The major postulates and theorems of Euclidean geometry
form the basis of this course. Logical
structures are investigated. Geometric
constructions and coordinate geometry are studied and non-Euclidean geometries
are introduced. Trigonometric ratios are used to solve triangle problems.
III. Needed Materials - Bring
to class every day!
1. A three ring
binder to be used for math class only.
2. Four dividers
for the binder marked quizzes, notes, assignments, tests.
3. Lined paper.
4. At least three
sharpened pencils. (Or a mechanical pencil with refills.)
5. A scientific
calculator.
IV. Homework and Grading Policies
You can expect approximately 40 minutes of daily
homework. It will be due at the
beginning of the next class session. You
must show your work on each problem to receive credit. Homework and quizzes are graded each day in
class. Tests will be graded and returned
within one to three class sessions.
Grades are updated regularly and may be checked on power school.
Grades are based on homework assignments (30%), quizzes
(10%), and tests (60%), and will follow the scale below. Our goal is for all students to achieve
success in this and future math courses.
To achieve that success the Timpanogos High School Math Department has
set a minimum competence level of 70%.
A 93-100% B 83-86% C 73-76%
A- 90-92% B- 80-82% C- 70-72%
B+ 87-89% C+ 77-79% F 69% and below
Note: If during the first
three terms a student’s percentage is 65-69, for one term only
the failing grade will be replaced with a “D-” if a grade of “C” or better is
earned in the following term.
V. Make-up
Work
Based upon the Timpanogos High School Attendance policy, missed
assignments due to absence may be made up provided a note or phone call from a
parent or guardian excusing the absence is received at the Attendance office
within one week. Any missed work
due to unexcused absences may not be made up for credit and therefore will
affect the academic grade.
If a student is absent on the date an assignment is given
and the absence is excused, the student will have the number of days he/she was
absent plus one day to turn in the assignment.
After that date the assignment will become a “0" in the grade
book. If your absence is due to an
excused school activity, your assignment will be due before you leave for the
activity. Late work due to
unpreparedness will not be accepted. Tests
missed due to excused absences must be made up before the next class session or
in class on the day the student returns.
VI. Tests
Test scores are directly related to homework
preparedness. Students should seek help
immediately for concepts not understood. I am available after school for help
until 3:30 pm. However at 3:30 pm I will ask students to leave so that I can
prepare for the next day.
If a
student is prepared daily and studies before test day, his/her test score will
reflect that preparedness. Retakes will
not be given. For security reasons, all tests must be completed within the
class period. Extra time after school will not be allowed.
VII. Classroom Rules
1. Begin the daily
warm up or quiz immediately when the bell rings.
2. LISTEN when the
teacher is talking.
3. Raise your hand
and wait to be recognized before speaking.
4. Work quietly on
the daily homework assignment until the bell rings.
5. NO
FOOD. NO CANDY. NO DRINKS.
Every student has the right to an environment conducive
to learning. Students will not be
allowed to prevent the teacher from teaching or to stop any other student from
learning. All students will receive
specific instructions concerning classroom and school wide expectations at the
beginning of the year. The school
discipline plan and consequences will be followed.
VIII. Cell
Phones, MP3’s and Other Electronic Equipment
These are not allowed in the classroom. Their use is
disrespectful and rude to the teacher and
distract you and others from learning. If they are
used during class they will be confiscated and delivered
to the principal’s office at a convenient time. The owner
may pick it up from the principal’s office.
IX. Cheating
All work is to be a student’s own. Cheating on assignments, quizzes, or tests or
talking to others during a test will result in a “0" which will be
averaged with the student’s other scores to determine his/her final grade.
X. Tardy and Attendance Policy
Punctual attendance is important for success in school
and in life. Tardiness and excessive
absence shows a lack of respect and dedication.
Meaningful instruction begins when the bell rings and continues
throughout the entire class period. You will do your best if you are in class
and on time. We will adhere to the Timpanogos High School Attendance Policy.
(See the Student Directory.)
