COURSE

DESCRIPTION

Statistics is the study of organizing data and data analysis, data collection, probability and inferences.

MATERIALS

Student materials required each day: textbook, a pencil, and a graphing calculator.

The TI-83 Plus or TI 84 Plus graphing calculator is recommended for this course.  The school has a limited number of TI 84 calculators that we rent to students @ $20.00 for the year. Any other graphing calculator may be used provided the student knows how to use it.

 

Mathematics Department Mission Statement

We believe that math is important to understand the world we live in and to open doors of opportunity.  As educators, we will strive to create a learning environment where all students can enjoy success.  In order to achieve that success, students and educators need to attend, contribute, and demonstrate good character.

 

Attendance Policy

Punctual attendance is important for success in school and in life. Tardiness and excessive absences shows a lack of respect and dedication. Meaningful instruction begins when the bell rings and continues throughout the entire class period.  You will do your best if you are in class and on time.  I will adhere to the school attendance policy. (See Student Handbook)

 

The PLAN

Students have been given a bookmark titled The PLAN.  The PLAN is guide that will help students learn math.  Please review this guide with your student.

 

Math Department Grading Scale

Our goal is for all students to achieve success in this course and future math courses.  To achieve success, Timpanogos High School Math Department has set a grading scale in which the minimum competence level is 70%. 

 

A           100-93%                               

B       86-83%       

C           76-73%   

A‑     92-90%             

B-     82-80%             

C-     72-70%       

B+    89-87%

C+    79-77% 

F       69% and below  

 

Note: If during the first three terms a student’s percentage is 65-69, for one term only the failing grade will be replaced with a “D-” if a grade of “C” or better is earned in the following term.

 

Grading Policies

 

Tests (60%)     Assignments (25%)     Quizzes (15%)

***Note:  Unexcused absences will result in a “0” for any test, assignment, or quiz given on that day.

 

1.   Tests-- Tests are given at the end of each chapter.  All tests must be completed within the class period.  Extra time after school will not be allowed.  Students absent on the day of the test will take the test the first day they return to class.  A score will be given for the test if their absence is excused through the attendance office.    ***Note:  Retakes on tests will be given.

 

 

 

 

 

2.  Assignments are the key to success in math—Students will be successful in math if they work independently and correctly complete all assigned problems. 

 

Assignments are given each day and are corrected at the beginning of the next class period.  ***Credit will not be given for late assignments.  Students should complete even those assignments for which they lost credit. 

 

Students should seek help immediately when they don’t know how to do assigned problems.  Most days, students can receive extra help on assignments by coming to class at 7:15-7:30 a.m. and after school at    2:30-3:30 p.m. 

 

It is important that students understand that I am here after school to help them.  However at 3:30, I will ask students to leave so that I can prepare for the next day.   Therefore, it is important that students seeking help come directly to my classroom after school to receive the desired help.

 

3. Quizzes--There is no make up for missed quizzes.  Each term, the lowest quiz score will be dropped. 

 

Cell Phones, MP3’s and Other Electronic Equipment

These are not allowed in the classroom. Their use is disrespectful and rude to the teacher and distracts you and others from learning. If they are used during class they will be confiscated and delivered to the principal’s office at a convenient time. The owner may pick it up from the principal’s office.

 

Classroom Rules

 

1.      Show respect for self and others.

2.      Come to class prepared to learn with book, pencil, paper and calculator.

3.      Be in assigned seat ready to work when the bell rings.

4.      NO food, drink, etc.  (bottled water is acceptable)

5.      I confiscate all cell phones, ipods, or pagers that I see.

 

Discipline Policy

 

The classroom will be a place where respect and responsibility are expected.  Respect of self, fellow students, teachers, and the classroom are all vital parts of classroom procedures. Students are responsible for coming to class prepared to learn and the learning the course curriculum.
