PACK

B2, Room 236

Mrs. Wilding, Advisor

Course Description

PACK serves as the Peer Leaders, and Esteem Team for Timpanogos High School.  This year we are also piloting a program called “Little Wolfies”, in which we will weekly walk down to Windsor Elementary School to help students and teachers there.  We also carry out four school-wide service projects, as well as a PACK service project each month.  Whenever school activities, such as Sophomore Day or Parent-Teacher Conferences occur, PACK is often seen in uniform, helping out.

CLASS TIME

You have an 80 minute class period every other day.  This is the time that we will meet together to accomplish our work.  It is highly important that everyone attends everyday, and on time!!  We uphold the school attendance policy.  Tardies and absences can be made up through ARC.  However, participation points can not.  In order to have an effective Peer Leader group, it is essential that all PACK members are included in our daily activities.

POLICIES

Due to the weekly participation with Windsor Elementary School, the including school in the “Little Wolfies” program, you will need parental participation to be excused to walk to Windsor during class time.  This will be under the direction of Mrs. Wilding.  Your parent’s signature on this form indicates his/her release for you to walk each day.

GRADES

Your grades will be broken down into three different categories:

Participation Points                    25 points daily for attendance AND participation, 50                                                                                points per poster, points for special events as dictated

Service Journal                          points vary according to the service, from P-T Conferences                                                                                    to Little Wolfies

Leadership Lessons                      150 points per lesson (2 per year)

Service Journal entries should have the content included in this format:  What I did, how much times I spent (in minutes), what impressed me, what I learned, what I would do the same for next time, what I would change, other notes.  Every Thursday I will check journals for Brown-Keyes (by last name).  Every Friday I will check journals for Knight-Wilson.  You will receive a bi-weekly total depending on which service projects took place in those weeks and on the extent of your serving in those projects.

Can you be excused from participating in an activity or assignment?  Only if enough advance notice is given to find someone else to fill in, or if you become incapacitated and cannot physically perform your assignment.  I understand that occasional emergencies arise that are out of your control.  In this case, call me as soon as possible.  If you simply do not show up, you will receive a zero on that assignment.

If you are required to attend an activity for another group as well as for PACK, you must decide which group you will represent for that occasion.  You cannot receive points for PACK if you are fulfilling obligations to another group.  (Ex:  You cannot receive points for attending a play, if you are in the play.)

All activities will have a designated person in charge—normally Mrs. Wilding, or a presidency member.  This person is responsible for taking attendance and running the activity.  It is your responsibility to make sure you have been marked present.  If you need to leave early, you must let the person in charge know.

MONEY & FINANCES

We are always going to worry about how much money we are spending each year.  We don’t want to waste money where it isn’t needed.  Please take care of all PACK materials and be aware of what you are requesting for our different activities.  Jason Longhurst is our treasurer and is responsible for all Purchase Orders (PO’s).  Anything that is purchased for PACK use must be purchased with a PO.  If you pay for something out of your own pocket, you will not be reimbursed unless the purchase was approved by me beforehand.  Reimbursements cannot be made after-the-fact.  This is an Alpine School District policy, not mine.

OTHER EXPECTATIONS

Attendance is extremely important in PACK.  You have the opportunity to earn 25 points for each day that class meets.  In order to earn all 25 points, you must be present, on time, and actively participating in all activities.  If you are tardy (within 10 minutes late) you will earn only 10 participation points.  If you are absent or more than 10 minutes late, you will not earn any points.  Absences must be cleared through the attendance office.  Non-participation in class (not completing homework, wasting time, abusing privileges, doing homework for other classes) will result in loss of all participation points for the day.

IMPORTANT:  I cannot excuse you from your other classes any more than your other teachers can excuse you from mine.  As a professional courtesy I will ask you to contact your other teachers first before missing their class or classes, for a PACK activity.  I cannot and will not excuse you “after the fact.”

A PACK member may be placed on probation if their behavior or performance is not consistent with that of a student leader.  A written warning and conference with Mrs. Wilding will take place on the first misbehavior.  If there is a second offense, then the student will be put on probation in a meeting with Mr. Browning, his/her parent and Mrs. Wilding.  If a third problem persists, then the student will be removed from PACK.  There are many qualified students at THS who would love to be on PACK.  Therefore, it is not fair to have someone on PACK who is not living up to their commitment or the expectations of a student leader.

COMMUNICATION

Communication is key to success.  I am available before and after school.  Parents, please arrange a time with me if you would like to talk.  The school phone number is 223-3120, my extension 117.  The easiest way to contact me is via email, wilding@alpine.k12.ut.us.

CONCLUSION

The students at Timpanogos High School are the best students with which I have ever had the pleasure of association.  Thus, I honor you and expect the very best in quality work and in behavior.  Mutual trust and respect in the learning environment are crucial to our success.  Please know such expectations and, if necessary, raise yourself to the occasion.  Never become involved in anything that will jeopardize your membership in PACK.  Be aware that you represent TIMPANOGOS HIGH SCHOOL wherever you are; make sure that your actions and words reflect this at all times.
