NEW SCHOLARSHIP LISTINGS (as of August 11th, 2010):


AES Engineers Scholarship: This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the "scholarship" page at www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. AES Engineering Solutions will be awarding $500 to the winner.  Deadline: October 8, 2010.

Veterans of Foreign Wars "Voice of Democracy" Audio Essay Scholarship: Students grades 9-12 write and record a 3-5 minute essay on this year's theme: "Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?" Submit it to your local VFW post for judging. Go online at www.vfw.org for details. Local VFW Post contact: Colin Strasburg, 801 447-5483 (after 3 pm) or Wilma Trax, 801-756-3609.  Deadline: November 1, 2010.

UVU Mechatronic Scholarships: The College of Technology and Computing at UVU still has almost thirty $5000/year scholarships for students entering the Mechatronics Technology AAS degree program for 2010-2011 school year. Must be a US citizen with a 2.5 GPA or higher and be ready to enroll in College Algebra (Math 1050 at UVU) during freshman year. After achieving an AAS degree in Mechatronics at UVU a student can continue on to a BS degree in Technology Management with a Mechatronics emphasis using if not all, almost all 69 credits (from the AAS Mechatronics degree) towards it. To apply for this scholarship, applicant must first apply and be admitted to UVU declaring their major to be Mechatronics Technology. Then apply on line at uvlink.uvu.edu/cp/home/loginf. There is no deadline for this scholarship. When the money runs out, the scholarships will stop being awarded.  

Navy ROTC Scholarship: These scholarships are valued at  up to $180,000 each, depending on the school selected, and can be used at over 160 of the top colleges and universities across the United States. They cover full tuition, books, fees, uniforms, and a monthly stipend of up to $400 for a bachelor degree. Get your applications in early to have the best chance of receiving scholarship as the selections board convenes in August 2010.  Deadline: January 31, 2011. Be sure to submit applications early. 

DFW International/Guide to Scholarships for New Americans and Minorities: In 2009, Dallas-Fort Worth International Community Alliance created this excellent website: www.dfwinternational.org/resource_center/Scholarship_Guide.pdf. It’s not only excellent information for new Americans and minorities, but is also excellent for anyone pursing a post high school education. This website helps in preparing for college by offering a timeline for high school students plus information regarding college prep curriculum and tests for college admission.  It gives information on how to enroll in college including how to select a school, types of colleges and college applications. There’s also a section on financial aid including the FAFSA, scholarships, loans and other informational resources. A directory of scholarships including scholarships for international study is at the end. This is well worth reading, especially during your freshman year of high school, but is valuable information to read even during your senior year.

Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund General Scholarships: Various general scholarships put together by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. See http://www.maldef.org/pdf/Scholarships.pdf for a list of the many scholarships available. Contact each scholarship provider for applications and details about updated requirements and deadlines.

U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship (Utah State): This scholarship criteria includes a 3.0 GPA or higher, an ACT score of 21 or higher, played on team sports in high school or excelled on a recreational team, been involved in student government, clubs at school, church responsibilities and scouting or volunteer organizations. UVU Individualized Tutoring: UVU Tutors offer a broad range of help from test taking skills and training to mentoring, tracking, and school/teacher networking. All services for students k-16 for $15/hour for Provo/Orem area and $17/hour for other areas. Gallons for Grades: Eligible students may download their best grade report from the 2009/2010 academic year to Tesoro beginning June 1, 2010 at www.TesoroGallonsFor Grades.com or via mail with appropriate sumission form also found at their website. An "A" average grade earns a $10 Tesoro reward card and an average "B" grade earns a $5 reward card. These may be redeemed for gas, food or merchandise at any participating Tesoro location. Deadline: August 31, 2010.

Wendy's High School Heisman: For both senior boy and girl high school athletes who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. Must have at least a "B" average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport. One boy and one girl will win a $10 Wendy's gift card and a Wendy's HS Heisman patch. The first 41,000 students to complete the application will win a Wendy's Gift Card in amounts ranging from $5 to $50. To apply go online at: www.wendysheisman.com. Deadline: October 3, 2010.

SCERA Volunteer Openings: The SCERA is looking for mature student volunteers to help share their enthusiasm at the SHELL Outdoor Theater and/or indoor SCERA Center. Volunteer jobs include ticket taking and sells, ushering, and concession sells. Time commitment is approximately 2-4 hours/week; daytime and evening shifts available. Westeminster College Experience Camps: Westminster College is offering several exciting summer youth camps including: academic, residential camps in aviation, robotics, finance and creative writing. College credit and limited financial support is available for students entering 11-12th grade. Westminster College is also offering Camp Great Salt Lake, Outdoor Recreation and athletic camps exposing students to possible career paths, college majors and college life in a safe and collaborative learning environment. Educator.com: An online educational tool that brings together the best and most effective teachers in the country to help answer your questions in school.  Covered areas include high school and university topics in mathematics, science, and computer programming. Video lectures include graphics and ability to pinpoint where your subject of interest is explained. To learn more see: www.educator.com, view the introductioin video and try one of the free sample lectures. Please note there is a cost for this online service.

UVU Financial Aid Workshop: UVU will be offering free Financial Aid workshops, every 2nd Thursday throughout the upcoming year. These events will generally be help in a computer lab in the Sorenson Student Center (Rm. 213A) from 6-8  PM. Parents and student alike can come learn about the FAFSA, receive help completing their applications, and meet with Financial Aid counselors. For more information call Hali Nielsen at 801.863.8731.

Orem's Junior Miss Scholarship Program: This program is an official local preliminary of the America's Junior Miss scholarship program that awards college scholarships to young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their communities. Orem's JM winner will advance to state competition at Utah's JM and that winner competes in the national competition, America's JM, in Mobile, Alabama. All State Junior Misses will compete for a share of at least $150,000 in cash scholarships. For details and to apply online, see: www.ajm.org/about/state_programs/utah/local_programs/orem/

Practical Dental Assisting of Utah: Have you ever thought about a career in dentistry? This dental assisting training is a 10 week program taught in a state-of-the-art facility in Lindon by highly trained dental personnel. Students learn by doing, instead of solely listening in class. Classes are held once a week from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm on Friday or Saturday. Tuition is $2995 and  internship hours are available with in-house dentist. Wellesley College Announces New NO-LOAN/LOW-LOAN Financial Aid Policy:  As of 2008-09, Wellesley will eliminate loans for low-income students and reduce or keep loans at their historically low levels for students who qualify. Wellesley will also raise scholarship or grant aid beyond its already generous yearly increases. This plan will eliminate loans for students from families with calculated incomes under $60,000. It will reduce loans by one-third for students from families with calculated incomes between $60,000 and  $100,000. Harvard College Financial Aid Policy:  Since December 2007, Harvard College has implemented a financial aid policy to ensure families with incomes below $60,000 are not asked to contribute to the cost of sending their children to Harvard.  For more information see www.admissions.college.harvard.edu.

QuestBridge National College Match: This free resource helps outstanding low-income high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to some of the nations most selective colleges.  Check it out at www.questbridge.org.

Neumont University: Neumont University, which is located south of Salt Lake City, Utah, was founded to revolutionize Computer Science education through a program that blends science and theory with relevant hands-on learning. Their approach combines mentoring, instruction, and project experience for companies like eBay, IBM, and ACS. Anycollege.com: A resource for finding a college with the right "fit" based on academic majors, sports, or location. Students and parents can also use this site to browse their resource center for information on Financial Aid, housing and what to expect the first year of college. Students can also apply for a $2,000 scholarship given away four times a year. See www.anycollege.com

Attention Parents of 2009 Graduated & 2010 Graduating Seniors Who've Gone or Will Be Going to College in the Fall: Are you aware of the American Opportunity Tax Credit? A taxpayer who pays qualified tuition and related expenses and whose federal income tax return has a modified adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less ($160,000 or less for joint filers) is eligible for the credit. The AOTC offsets the cost of college by reducing the amount of income tax you owe. It equals 100% of the first $2,000 and 25% of the next $2,000 of qualified expenses for a cap of $2,500. And up to $1,000 of the credit can be refunded to you if your credit is more than the amount of tax you owe. To take advantage of this refund, or to see if you qualify, contact your tax agent or see: www.irs.gov, click on far right “Tax Exempt Bond Community” tab at top, then “Newsroom” button under IRS Resources list at left middle, then on tax article, "Tax Benefits for Education: Information"  Be sure to check out the Q & A link in article for more answers. To date, this tax credit is effective for 2009 and 2010 tax returns only.
