NEW SCHOLARSHIP LISTINGS (as of November 9, 2009):

Gear Up Scholarship: Gear Up is a federally funded scholarship program for any high school student who qualifies and enrolls. The scholarship award is $5,350 per year for 4 years.  This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Applicants must be eligible (not necessarily enrolled) for the Free & Reduced Lunch. To earn the scholarship, applicant must be: Pell Grant eligible (see  www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/governance/notices/iegs/IEGs09-10.pdf),  have above average attendance (make up all absences and tardiness), graduate with a high school diploma, participate in the Gear Up program (a minimum 30 hours per year of after-school homework and/or free tutoring, if needed), apply and be accepted to any accredited school in the USA, and pass the ACT (whatever score is required by the college to which applied). FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) "Freedom in Academia" Student Essay Contest: For high school seniors. Must write 700-1,200 word indepth essay on why free speech and First Amendment rights are crucial to higher education and how abuses of these rights harm the college experience. First place winner receives a $5,000 college scholarship, two second place winners receive $2,500 each and five runners up receive $1,000 each.  For more information and online application go to www.thefire.org/contestsDeadline: November 6, 2009.  

ACLU Student Activist Scholarship: For seniors who have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties through some form of activism. Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Three $1,000 awards will be given. See www.acluutah.org/scholarship.htm for more information or the Career Center Scholarship files. Deadline: November 10, 2009.

Principal's Leadership Award: Senior in top 20% of class, nominated by school principal.  One nominee from THS.  $6.00 processing fee. Apply online at: www.principals.org/PLA. Print out and submit applications to Mrs. Miller in the Counseling Center by the Deadline: November 13, 2009.  THS will select one student to represent the school from among the pool of applicants.

Navy ROTC Scholarship: These scholarships are valued at  up to $180,000 each, depending on the school selected, and can be used at over 160 of the top colleges and universities across the United States. They cover full tuition, books, fees, uniforms, and a monthly stipend of up to $400 for a bachelor degree. Be sure to submit applications early to have best chance of receiving scholarship.

The AXA Achievement Scholarship: AXA, in association with U.S. News and World Report, offers college scholarships of $10,000 and $25, 000 to applicants who: (1) are U.S. citizens or legal residents, (2) are current seniors planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college/university in the U.S. by fall 2009, (3) who set and reach ambitious goals, (4) have demonstrated drive, determination and ability to succeed in college, (5) have respect for self, family and community, and (6) have Applicant Appraisal by an unrelated adult who is familiar with students outstanding achievement.  See www.axa-achievement.com for more details and online application. Deadline: December 15, 2009.

Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Scholarship Contest (Wasatch Range): This is for seniors with the following good citizenship qualities: dependability, service leadership and patriotism. Must be nominated by a teacher. Only one student will be selected to complete the application process which includes two parts. Part One includes a personal statement on students manifested qualities of good citizenship, two letters of recommendation and an official transcript; Part Two includes a timed essay written by student "at" THS w/o assistance or reference material and administered by school official. The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest: The American Legion Orem Post 72 will be conducting this contest (beginning level) on December 30, 2009 in the Orem City Council Chambers at 7 pm (arrive by 6:30 pm). This contest is for students who are U.S. citizens and will be under the age of 20 by the national contest on April 9, 2010. Contestants will be required to deliver the same two timed speeches before judges at each of three levels (local/post, district, and national). The first speech (Prepared Oration) must be between 8 and 10 minutes and on some aspect of the Constitution with emphasis on duties and obligations of a citizen to government. The second speech (Assigned Topic) will be on one of four assigned topics which the contestant will research ahead of time, but not know which one they will speak on until 5 minutes before delivery. Awards on the local level (depending on order of finish) range from $50-$100. Awards on the national level range from $14,000 to $18,000 with each state participant receiving a $1,500 scholarship for participating. Gates Millennium Scholars: Outstanding students with demonstrated leadership abilities who have significant financial need. Students are eligible if they are: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American, are a legal citizen of U.S., 3.3 GPA, enrolling first time in an accredited U.S. college or university in Fall of 2010, meet Federal Pell Grant criteria and submit the 3 required forms. To apply, see www.gmsp.org  for the online application process. Deadline by mail or online: January 1, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

George Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship: Are you a senior who enjoys politics, is a history buff or looking at military service in the future? Then this scholarship may be for you!  GWCF Scholarship is for seniors planning a career in government service.  Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $7,500.  Must be a U.S. citizen, write a one-page essay, and submit a transcript, national test scores, and a letter of recommendation among other items.  See www.gwcf.org for details and application process.  Deadline: January 15, 2010.

Utah Association of Educational Office Professionals Scholarship: A $500 scholarship award for students wanting to enter an office-related business program in an institution of higher learning after high school graduation. Must complete all application materials along with a transcript, three letters of recommendation, and an essay on "Why I am Choosing an Office-Related Career or Vocation?" Other criteria include a required number of business classes, scholastic record, activities in school/extracurricular and financial need. Provo Elks' Lodge/Utah Elks Alternative Scholarships: For seniors from alternative academic programs (i.e, Alternative High School, Special Needs or applying to Technical/Vocational School programs). Will be judged on multiple achievements: character, leadership, service, citizenship and scholarship ability. Applications are available at www.elksinutah.org/Elks Scholarship and Grant Forms/Education Scholarships.html (Click on “Application & Instructions – PDF File Format” link at bottom) or Career Center Scholarship files. Deadline: January 16, 2010 by 9pm to Elks Lodge.

UVU Technology Leadership ScholarshipHalf-tuition for students seeking technology-based degrees. Must be enrolled in the College of Technology and computing and taking 6 credits per semester and a member of the Center for the Advancement of Leadership @UVU.  For more information, see www.uvu.edu/leadership/current/scholarships.html. Deadline: February 1, 2010.

UVU Presidential Leadership Program Scholarship: This scholarship is open for selected incoming freshmen students participating in the Presidential Leadership Program for fall 2010/Spring 2011 school year. It’s value is approximately $2,000 and has the potential of being reinstated the following year if all requirements are met. Students are encouraged to apply for other scholarships and financial aid opportunities at UVU. Must have applied for admissions and been accepted for this scholarship. Energy Solutions Math, Science & Engineering Foundation Scholarship: For 10th graders with a minimum 3.5 GPA maintained through high school, active participation and /or leadership in school, work, and/or extracurricular activities, planning to enter a bachelor's degree program at an accredited university or junior college after graduation in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, environmental science, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, or physics. Scholarship recipients receive $2,000 with top 10% qualifying for one of 3 Distinguished Awards ranging from $2,500 to $25,000. BYU, U of U, USU, Weber, and Westminster College will match $2,000 should the recipient choose to attend their school. KFC Colonel's Scholars Program: Must be a graduating senior this school year with a 2.75 GPA or higher, a demonstrated financial need and planning to pursue a bachelor's degree at an in-state public institution no later than 9/30/10.  Applicant will need to complete a FAFSA application. Award is renewable for up to $5,000/year for 4 years. Must apply and submit application online at www.kfcscholars.org between December 1, 2009 and the Deadline: February 10, 2010.

National Commission for Cooperative Education Scholarship: For seniors pursuing a career in college cooperative education at one of eight NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities. Student must have a 3.5 GPA, complete the application including a one-page essay and submit by the Deadline: February 15, 2010. Ayn Rand "Anthem" Essay Contest: For 9th and 10th grade students. Prize awards vary from $30 to $2,000.  Choose from three topics regarding the Ayn Rand book, “Anthem" and write a no less than 600 to no more than 1,200 word essay. For more information see Career Center Scholarship files or Mrs. Miller or to submit essay along w/other information online go to www.aynrand.org/contests.  Applications by mail must be postmarked by Deadline: March 20, 2010.   

U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship: Forty $1,000 scholarships awarded in a random drawing.  No essays or minimum GPA required. Seniors need to apply online at www.usbank.com/studentloans by the Deadline: March 30, 2010.

Ayn Rand "The Fountainhead" Essay Contest: For 11th and 12th grade students. Prize awards vary from $50 to $10,000. Choose from three topics regarding the book, "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand.  Write an essay no fewer than 800 to no more than 1,600 words. For more information see Career Center Scholarship files or Mrs. Miller or to submit essay along w/other information online go to www.aynrand.org/contests.  Applications by mail must be postmarked by Deadline: April 26, 2010. 

BigSun Scholarship 2009: A $500 scholarship award for one deserving student athlete, regardless of which sport they are participating in. Must complete a short essay answering the question: "How has your participation in sports affected the person you are becoming?" For more details see www.bigsunathletics.com. All essays submissions should be sent to: athleticawards@bigsunathletics.com by the Deadline: June 24, 2010.

UVU Mechatronic Scholarships: The College of Technology and Computing at UVU still has almost thirty $4000/year scholarships for students entering the Mechatronics Technology AAS degree program for 2009-2010 school year. Must be a US citizen with a 2.5 GPA or higher and be ready to enroll in College Algebra (Math 1050 at UVU) during freshman year. After achieving an AAS degree in Mechatronics at UVU a student can continue on to a BS degree in Technology Management with a Mechatronics emphasis using if not all, almost all 69 credits (from the AAS Mechatronics degree) towards it. To apply for this scholarship, applicant must first apply and be admitted to UVU declaring their major to be Mechatronics Technology. Then apply on line at uvlink.uvu.edu/cp/home/loginf. There is no deadline for this scholarship. When the money runs out, the scholarships will stop being awarded.

Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund General Scholarships: Various general scholarships put together by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Creative Web Design Scholarship:  Are you a senior who enjoys designing web sites with ease? Are you looking for help in doing so?  Then this scholarship is for you! No Deadline for this scholarship. U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship (Utah State): This scholarship criteria includes a 3.0 GPA or higher, an ACT score of 21 or higher, played on team sports in high school or excelled on a recreational team, been involved in student government, clubs at school, church responsibilities and scouting or volunteer organizations. Empowering Your Tomorrow: This is an exciting conference for 6th - 12th grade boys held November 7, 2009 from 7 am – 1:30 pm at UVU Sorensen Student Center. While exploring amazing education opportunities and careers, boys will be able to attend hands-on workshops and explore interactive booths where they can play with robots, take flight in the UVU Aviation flight simulator and much more! Parents will be able to attend specialized workshops on how to help boys succeed in their education, career and life. Scholarships are available for boys from low-income families. Science Day at the U: Join the College of Science and College of Mines and Earth Science on Saturday, November 7, 2009, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm to learn of the immense variety of careers in science, mathematics and science-related fields. USU Diversity Days: This program was designed to provide under-represented minority high school juniors and seniors with information, exposure, and experiences about college life at USU. Students will attend a college class, learn about financial aid, student life, and housing options. Registration fee is $20 and pre-registration is required and ends on November 9, 2009. ATTENTION GEAR-UP STUDENTS: Remember to report your attendance at College Day to your Gear-Up supervisor for credit towards your yearly 30-hour attendance requirement. Also, be sure to attend the Tri-School College Fair at Mountain View High School from 6:30 - 8:30 pm on November 11, 2009. Remember you get "double" hours if one parent attends or "triple" hours if both parents attend with you.

University at Buffalo's Fall Discovery Daye: For those who could not attend the Fall Open House (see above), this alternate event will give a good look at all UB has to offer and will take place November 11, 2009. For more information see admissions.buffalo.edu/discoverday.

Snow College Admissions & Scholarship Open House: On November 18, 2009 Snow College will host an Open House at the Orem Hampton Inn, University Parkway from 5:30 - 9 pm. Red Storm Retreat at Dixie State College: This retreat is to help get prospective students excited about college education and the opportunities available at Dixie. Students have a choice of one or two days for this retreat on either November 20-21, 2009; January 22-23 2010; or February 19-20, 2010. First day is the College Life Experience featuring student-sponsored activities such as a sporting event or dance and a chaperoned sleepover complete with climbing wall, foosball and other fun games. Dinner is provided. Day two is the Academic Experience and Dixie Information sessions available for both students and parents. Department reps will answer questions regarding academic majors, financial aid, scholarships, etc. Afterwards, students will learn about campus life while parents attend a parent break-out session. Cost is $25 per student for two day experience or $10 per student for one day experience and $5 for Saturday parent session.

College of Eastern Utah Eagle Experience: CEU would like to invite seniors to come to an Eagle Experience.  This FREE experience gives seniors an opportunity to see what CEU has to offer.  Information on admissions, scholarships, leadership opportunities, and other important areas of interest relating to their college education is offered. Seniors may choose from one or two day Experiences. Next Eagle Experience is November 20th. Snow College "Snow Blasts:" For $25 Snow College offers a one night, two day campus visit for senior high school students to come learn what it's like to be a student at Snow.  Stay includes tour of campus, meals, lodging, information & advisement about Snow, tickets to events, and a free Snow T-shirt. Choose from Nov. 20-21, Jan. 29-30, Feb. 12-13, 19-20, 26-27, and April 16-17 to visit. To register, go to www.snow.edu/snowblast; click on the "Snow Blast" tab. Remember, a senior gets one "school-excused" day to visit a college.

2010 Spirit of America Youth Conference at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania: This is youth conference is offered by the Utah Chapter of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for 11th grade students who demonstrate leadership qualities, high academic achievement, and exemplary citizenship. Two letters of recommendation, list of extra-curricular activities, work experience, essay on patriotic theme (What is Your American Dream?), photo of self and a signed "commitment" sheet are required with application.  Total cost of Conference is $800; students pay $300 of that cost (which includes airfare).  Winners may select one of two dates held March 11-14 or April 22-25 to attend. See Mrs. Miller in Counseling Center for applications. Deadline: November 27, 2009.

Boston University Trustee Scholarship Competition: If you are a senior thinking of or planning to go to Boston University, are in the top 10% of your class and are an active leader in school and commuinity, this scholarship competition may be for you.  More information and all required submission materials including application, essays and nominations for this four-year, full tuition scholarship can be found at www.bu.edu/admissions/trustee and must be submitted by the Deadline: December 1, 2009.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards:
This awards program sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is the nation's longest-running, largest, most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts grades 7-12. Students receive various Key awards at regional levels that determine for what they can apply including scholarships, summer art and writing programs,
and intensives. For more information see www.artandwriting.orgDeadlines vary between December 11, 2009 and January 29, 2010 depending on which of three categories is chosen for competition (Art, Writing, Video).  

The Art Instututes "Best Teen Chef 2010" Competition for Scholarships: For seniors pursuing a Culinary Arts degree. Will need to go to www.artinstitutes.edu/btc, click on "Download the best teen chef brochure" at bottom, fill out  the "BTC Competition Entry & Release Form" and submit itby February 5, 2010. Winners earn tuition scholarships to one of the Culinary Schools at The Art Institute. For more information and a list of participating schools, click on "Download the BTC Competition Official Rules and Regulations."

Governor's Honors Academy: The Governor's Honors Academy is a prestigious ten day program designed to seek out Utah's most gifted high school leaders and scholars entering 12th grade. The ten day program, held June 23-July 2, 2010, provides students a stimulating curriculum of study taught by a distinguished and dynamic Academy faculty at Southern Utah University. The cost is $800 for all expenses of the 10 day Academy. Those participants who attend the entire Academy will receive 6 college credits and a 4-year scholarship to SUU. USU Leadership Conference 2010: USU and Utah Association of Student Councils have partnered to provide a leadership training conference for student leaders Spend three days at USU (June 21-23, 2010) learning all about communication, initiative, planning, teamwork, and bringing energy to your school. Activities include a ropes course, aquatic center, hands-on break out sessions, guest speakers, a service project, large group workshops, Spirit Bowl, Aggie Idol and dance. Cost is $200 which includes: room, board (3 meals/day), dance, panoramic picture, conference DVD, training manual, and t-shirt. Gallons for Grades: Eligible students may download their best grade report from the 2009/2010 academic year to Tesoro beginning June 1, 2010 at www.TesoroGallonsFor Grades.com or via mail with appropriate sumission form also found at their website. An "A" average grade earns a $10 Tesoro reward card and an average "B" grade earns a $5 reward card. These may be redeemed for gas, food or merchandise at any participating Tesoro location. Deadline: August 31, 2010.

UVU Financial Aid Workshop: UVU will be offering free Financial Aid workshops, every 2nd Thursday throughout the upcoming year. These events will generally be help in a computer lab in the Sorenson Student Center (Rm. 213A) from 6-8  PM. Parents and student alike can come learn about the FAFSA, receive help completing their applications, and meet with Financial Aid counselors. For more information call Hali Nielsen at 801.863.8731.

Orem's Junior Miss Scholarship Program: This program is an official local preliminary of the America's Junior Miss scholarship program that awards college scholarships to young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their communities.  Orem's JM winner will advance to state competition at Utah's JM and that winner competes in the national competition, America's JM, in Mobile, Alabama.  All State Junior Misses will compete for a share of at least $150,000 in cash scholarships.  For details and to apply online, see: www.ajm.org/about/state_programs/utah/local_programs/orem/

Practical Dental Assisting of Utah: Have you ever thought about a career in dentistry? This dental assisting training is a 10 week program taught in a state-of-the-art facility in Lindon by highly trained dental personnel. Students learn by doing, instead of solely listening in class. Classes are held once a week from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm on Friday or Saturday. Tuition is $2995 and  internship hours are available with in-house dentist. Wellesley College Announces New NO-LOAN/LOW-LOAN Financial Aid Policy:  As of 2008-09, Wellesley will eliminate loans for low-income students and reduce or keep loans at their historically low levels for students who qualify. Wellesley will also raise scholarship or grant aid beyond its already generous yearly increases. This plan will eliminate loans for students from families with calculated incomes under $60,000. It will reduce loans by one-third for students from families with calculated incomes between $60,000 and  $100,000. Harvard College Financial Aid Policy:  Since December 2007, Harvard College has implemented a financial aid policy to ensure families with incomes below $60,000 are not asked to contribute to the cost of sending their children to Harvard.  For more information see www.admissions.college.harvard.edu.

Neumont University: Neumont University, which is located south of Salt Lake City, Utah, was founded to revolutionize Computer Science education through a program that blends science and theory with relevant hands-on learning.  Their approach combines mentoring, instruction, and project experience for companies like eBay, IBM, and ACS. Anycollege.com: A resource for finding a college with the right "fit" based on academic majors, sports, or location. Students and parents can also use this site to browse their resource center for information on Financial Aid, housing and what to expect the first year of college.
