Planning for a Career Career planning should begin as early as possible. Explore as many options as you can while you are in high school to help you decide on and prepare for a career. You will likely change directions many times, even after you complete your education and actually begin working in a certain field. Don't let the fact that you haven't yet "made a decision" about what kind of work you are going to pursue stop you from making progress toward a successful career. Here are some activities and resources that will help you learn about careers and explore all of the many good options that are available to you: Choices Planner
is the main program used at THS for career and educational planning.
You can take various individual assessments, research careers, search
for schools nationwide, etc. You'll need the following information to
access the program and be able to save your information into a personal
portfolio to use repeatedly. Do What You Are
is an online personality test which will identify your Myers-Briggs
personality type and give you some suggestions of possible career
choices in various fields which would match your type. You'll need the
following information to access the program: UtahMentor.org is an extremely valuable website. You can access information about countless careers on this site. You can also learn all about Utah's colleges and universities and their specific programs, take practice tests for the ACT, search for scholarships, etc. Spend some time getting to know your way around this site. Another great state-sponsored website is careers.utah.gov. You can find links to the federal department of labor's web site (to research most career possibilities), detailed information about the job market in Utah, training programs (at private and technical schools as well as major colleges and universities), and much, much more. Many excellent career opportunities are available in the military. Click here to locate websites of each active duty branch of our United States Military services (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy), and their National Guard and Reserve components. You will find lots of information about enlisted and officer career opportunities. If you already have an idea which career you want to pursue, you should select classes in high school which will prepare you well for that career and the further training you will need. Various THS Career Pathways may provide some suggestions about high school class selection for the specific career you have in mind. The THS Career Center (located in the Counseling Center) has lots more resources to help you learn about possible careers.
