General Info Regarding the Graduation Ceremony
(for specific dates and times refer to the Calendar)

The graduation committee is eager to have commencement exercises be a formal recognition of the hard work and academic achievement accomplished by this year's graduates. Your assistance in helping us achieve this objective is essential. Please keep in mind the following requirements as you encourage and support your senior through graduation exercises in order that it will be a positive experience for all involved.

1. Commencement is at the UVSC McKay Events Center. Seniors must be at their assigned location in the McKay Center approximately one hour early (see Calendar). This allows us time to ensure that the line up is accurate for the reading of names during diploma distribution. It is helpful to select a rendezvous site for your graduate and family members after graduation. The McKay Center is a crowded place after graduates are dismissed, and your student can be difficult to find amongst the other graduates who are dressed alike in their caps and gowns.

2. All graduates should be ATTIRED APPROPRIATELY. This means white shirts and ties for the boys and the white collars, included in the cap and gown packet, affixed around the neckline of the gown for the girls. Please NO jeans, shorts or grubby clothing. Tivas, tennis shoes and flip flop sandals of any type will not be permitted. Mortar boards (graduation caps) are correctly worn flat with the peak over the center of the forehead. Tassels should be placed under the button and hang from the left side. Gowns should be pressed with a cool iron, no steam, so that they flow. Since the academic costume ( the cap and gown) dates back to fourteenth century English scholars, it represents a tradition of some standing. We would appreciate full compliance with this tradition. The graduation ceremony is optional; consequently, those students not wishing to participate may pick up their diploma later in the counseling office.

3. Parents, family and friends are NOT PERMITTED ON THE FLOOR AND/OR TUNNELS (where graduates line up) of the McKay Center for any reason. Please plan to take pictures, hand out leis or other mementos before the ceremony or after the exercises are completed. You will not be permitted down in the tunnels with the graduates to hand them additional items. Again it is suggested you designate a rendezvous site for your graduate and family members after graduation.

4. Graduates will be expected to BEHAVE APPROPRIATELY throughout the graduation ceremonies. Any behavior that attracts attention to one graduate by taking attention away from the ceremony itself or other graduates will not be tolerated. Graduates will be expected to stand at the " T" and walk to the center of the floor to receive their diploma without engaging in pranks or distracting antics . The credibility of the exercise is demeaned by childish, inappropriate, behavior unbecoming a THS graduate. Students who do not comply with this request will have their diploma pulled and forfeit their privilege to attend the senior all-nighter. We want everyone to enjoy the recognition they have earned unimpeded by the clowning of others.

5. GRADUATION PRACTICE will be held (see Calendar) at the McKay Center. Attendance is MANDATORY for all graduates! Please be on time. (Please check in the Counseling Center for your assigned seat/row prior to the practice. This will facilitate finding your line up station.) YEARBOOKS will be distributed immediately following practice back at THS for all seniors who ATTEND graduation practice.
